EFFECT OF LETHALLY IRRADIATED CELLS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW-BORN RATS

The effects of heterotransplantation of irradiated hyperdiploid (E/Dipl) and hypotetraploid (E/Sto) variants of Ehrlich's ascites tumor on the development of 1- and 2days-old rats were studied. The cells were given a lethal dose of 12,000 r x radiation and injected intraperitoneally into the mice, and the body weight and length of the mice were followed for times up to 24 days after injeetion and compared with controls. The rats injected with E/Sto cells began to show a marked growth retardation after 6 to 9 days, while E/Dipl cells showed almost no growth retardation. The difference in the effect of E/Dipl and E/Sto cells may be due to the higher radioresistance of E/Sto cells. No tumor growth resulted. (D.L.C.)
