A system for remote handling of vertically loaded fuel elements, in which radiation hazards are considerably reduced, is patented. A transfer flask for carrying fuel elements is mounted within the inner containment structure of the reactor. The flask contains a mechanism for lowering and raising the fuel element into and out of the flask. The flask can be moved to a number of ports in the floor of the transfer passage, that communicate with the loading bay, an irradiated fuel-element storage facility, a canning cell, and a reactor-pressure- vessel entry port.
