A simplified design for a power reactor installation using a reactor, such as a gas-cooled heterogeneous reactor, that requires fuel changing and control-rod servicing during operation is patented. The reactor has horizontal fuel and control-rod channels. Fuel handling is carried out at one face of the reactor, and control-rod extraction is carried out at another. A servicing machine is designed to be moved from one face to another and to be used for both control-rod extraction and fuel handling. The reactor and its pressure vessel, biological shielding, and steam-raising apparatus are all enclosed within a gascontaining structure. The 2 faces of the reactor to be serviced are outside of the gas-containing structure. (M.P.G.)
