A reactor fuel element having heat-transfer finning and flow-splitters intersecting the heat-transfer finning is patented. To make the fuel element stable when it is subjected to a flow of pressurized coolant, two tubular shrouding members are provided. The shrouding members, which may be metal, surround the flow-splitters at or near each end of the fuel element. Each shrouding member is at least 1/20 the length of the flow-splitters. (M.P.G.)
