THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS RADIOPROTECTIVE SUBSTANCES ON THE RADIOSENSITIVITY OF EHRLICH CARCINOMA IN VITRO AND IN VIVO (in German)

Experiments in mice involving irradiation of the ascites tumor in vitro showed significant protective effects of cysteamine, nicotinic acid amide and serotonin, whereas thiourea, D-penicillamine, 5-mercaptopyridoxine, and nicotinic acid were found to increase the sensitivity of the tumor to radiation. In vivo experiments with the solid tumor showed marked increases of the resistance of the tumor towards local radiation doses after intraperitoneal injection of cysteamine and serotonin in mice. 5-Mercaptopyridoxine and D-penicillamine also appeared to increase resistance, whereas thiourea showed no effect. The lack of protection with thiourea in vivo is unexpected since it was effective in vitro and is known to act as an acceptor of OH radicals released in the primary radiation reaction. The differences in the effect of some agents on the tumor cells in vitro and in vivo may reflect a direct toxicity of these agents on the cells when tested in vitro. (BBB)
