IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO THE PRODUCTION OF URANIUM METAL
A process for the production of U metal by reduction of uranium tetrafluoride with Mg metal is patented. The reactants are compacted to raise the bulk density of the charge and then heated in a reaction vessel in 2 consecutive stages. In the first stage, which occupies the major part of the total heating period, the reactants are heated to a temperature below the temperature of initiation of the reaction, and the reaction vessel is evacuated. In the second stage, heating is continued under a blanket of inert gas to the temperature of initiation of the reaction. The gas may be Ar at a pressure of 10 to 15 lbs above atmospheric pressure. The process produces cleaner U metal with less slag inclusion. (M.P.G.)
