A method for the production of U metal by the reduction of uranium tetrafluoride is patented. UF/sub 4/ is compacted with magnesium metal, and the reactants are heated in a reaction vessel to a temperature below the reaction initiation temperature while evacuating the vessel. The heating is continued to the reaction initiation temperature under a blanket of inert gas at a pressure of ontrol migra- 10 to 15 lbs above atmospheric pressure. This results in improved reaction efficiency and improved life of the graphite, which lines the reaction vessel. (M.P.G.)
