FUEL ELEMENT RECOVERY PROCESS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4711062

An oxidative-slagging process for recovering radioactive and fissionable products from carbon is patented. Graphite-encased uranium-containing nuclear fuel elements or fuel elements of the ceramic carbonaceous type are oxidized in an inert atmosphere containing ontrol migra- 3 to 7 vol% of oxygen at a temperature of ontrol migra- 1550 to 1650 c- F and under conditions of nonself-sustaining combustion. The process results in a controlled decomposition of the fuel element, leaving the solid products of oxidation quantitatively at the location of the oxidation and easily available for recovery.
