A process for the production of rare-earth arsenides is patented. Specific arsenides produced are EuAs, GdAs, TbAs, DyAs, HoAs, ErAs, TmAs, and YbAs. Portions of the finely divided rare-earth element are mixed with an equimolar quantity of arsenic, also finely divided. The mixture is compacted and heated in an inert atmosphere to ontrol migra- 350 c- C, where a violent exothermic reaction is initiated, which produces the desired end product. The product can then be compacted into a desired shape. The arsenides are semiconducting materials, which can be used in thermoelectric applications at high temperatures. (M.P.G.)
