PROCESS FOR TREATING ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4635216
A process for treating workpieces of Zr alloys to improve resistance to corrosion by steam and by water at high pressure and temperature is patented. The alloys contain from 0.5 to 5% of Nb, 3% or less of Sn, and 0.5% or less each, and in toto 2% or less. of Fe, Ni, Cr, Ta, Pd, Mo, and W. The workpiece is cold shaped and is then given heat treatment at temperatures from 550 to 590 deg C. Before being cold shaped, the workpiece may be given conventional annealing or hot shaping at temperatures from 640 to 1000 deg C. The workpiece may be given a number of cold shaping treatments, with or without intermediate heat treatments, and the heat treatment may be given before or after the final cold shaping. (M.P.G.)
