A silver-base alloy containing 0.5 to 35% by weight Eu is patented. The Ag content of the alloy should be at least 66%. The alloy may also contain Cd, In, Au, Pd, and Pt. The Ag content of the alloy may be reduced to not less than 55% wben 0.1 to 10% of Au, Pd, and/or Pt are added. The alloy may be prepared by melting the metals in a Ta crucible under reduced pressure at a temperature between 650 and 900 deg C, casting the molten metal into a graphite crucible under an Ar atmosphere, cooling the bars or ingots, and then heating them to 450 deg C for several hours. Reactor control rods may be manufactured from the bars or ingots by the usual shaping methods. (M.P.G.)
