IMPROVEMENTS IN METHODS OF HYDRIDING ZIRCONIUM AND ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4702097
A method of uniformly hydriding solid pieces of Zr and Zr alloys of substantial size without cracking is patented. Solid metal containing at least 50% by weight of Zr is heated in an evacuated chamber tc a temperature of at least 700 deg C. Hydrogen is introduced into the chamber in very small increments and at a very slow rate of pressure build-up, so that hydriding in a given phase of the H-Zr system is essentially completed before substantial hydriding in the next succeesive phase is obtained. Hydriding is completed in the gamma Zr phase, and the hydriding temperature is lowered while H is still being introduced in small increments. The resulting hydrided pieces of predetermined size and shape are ready for immediate use without shaping operations. (M.P.G.)
