Low-dose irradiation with 25 R of x radiation induces cell death in the lymphatic system and almost all cells die with 600 R of x irradiation. Radioinduced cell death in lymphocytes is considered to be due to interphase death or reproductive death. The theory that reproductive death is caused by radioinduced damage of DNA is not proved yet. ATP, which is an energy source of living cells, is considered to play an important role in energy metabolism. Therefore, radioinduced metabolic damage causes functional injuries of cells which lead to interphase death of the cell. With radioinduced decrease of ATP level, increase of ADP and AMP is observed in cells such as liver cells, which is thought to be due to decrease of the level of total adenine nucleotides. It is suggested that ATP energy is accumulated in the form of fructose-1, 6-diphosphate after radiation damage of phosphofructokinase, and degradation of adenine nucleotides increases with decrease of ATP, which leads to cell death due to functional damage in metabolism in which ATP is involved.
