From first international conference on stable isotopes in chemistry, biology, and medicine; Argonne, Illinois, USA (9 May 1973). In proceedings of the first international conference on stable isotopes in chemistry, biology, and medicine. The hypotheses that net isotope effects will be reflected in differences between the answers obtained from the use of /sup 15/N-depleted and / sup 15/N-enriched fertilizers, and that materials containing different levels of enrichment will behave identically, are supported by the data obiained from a 3- week incubation experiment. The techniques described are applicable to a variety of soil-fertilizer systems for which the tacit assumption of identical behavior for the isotopes/sup 14/N and /sup 15/N cannot safely be made. Of particular interest are those systems from which large losses of N may' occur by volatilization or leaching, and those to which large amounts of readily-available energy materials have been added.
