The uptake of /sup 169/Yb-citrate by Ehrlich's tumor-bearing mice and Yoshida sarcoma-bearing rats was studied. The excretion following intraperitoneal injection of /sup 169/YbCl/sub 3/ and /sup 169/Yb-citr ate was examined. The excretion of /sup 169/Yb-citrate was significantly and consistently greater than that of /sup 169/YbCl/sub 3/. When the /suSTA 169/Yb citrate containlng carrier dose of 0.5 mg stable YbCl/sub 3/ was injected in Ehrlich's tumor-bearing mice, the excretion of the /sup 169/Yb-citrate was greatly decreased. In addition, when the /sup 169/Ybcitrate containing carrier dose of 0.5 mg stable CaCl/sub 2/ was injected in Ehrlich's tumor-bearing mice, the excretion of the /sup 169/Yb-citrate was somewhat decreased. Scintigrams taken 48 hrs after the administration of 150 mu Ci of /sup 169/Yb-citrate in Yoshida sarcoma-bearing rats showed high uptake in bone and in tumor. Whole-body autoradiograms taken 48 hrs after the administration of 100 mu Ci of /sup 169/Yb- citrate in Ehrlich's tumor-bearing mice showed high uptake in bone but the uptake in other organs was poor. Furthermore, /sup 169/Yb-citrate was obviously taken up by the active inflammatory lesions in the femoral region of rats as well as the tumor tissue. A comparison of the accumulation of /sup 169/Ybcitrate with the accumulation of /sup 67/Ga-citrate in the Ehrlich's tumor-bearing mice was performed. It was found that /sup 67/Gacitrate was better incorporated in Ehrlich's tumor than /sup 169/Ybcitrate. Clinically, because /sup 169/Yb-citrate strongly accumulates in the vertebra as well as in tumor tissue, it is impossible to diagnose cancerous lesions of the mediastinum. (auth)
