Translated from Zh. Tekh. Fiz.; 42: No. 10, 2144-2152(Oct 1972). An investigation of a Knudsen thermionic converter with two gases reveals new means of investigating the potential distribution. The relationship between the saturation current in a thermionic converter and the degree of compensation is examined. The shape of this function indicates whether the potential well is filled with ions. Experiments with a thermionic converter filled with a Cs-- Ba mixture show that in the undercompensated regime the potential well is not filled with ions. (auth)
