Translated from Zh. Tekh. Fiz.; 17: No. 8, 1662-1668. The plasma parameters and cathode properties under overneutralized Knudsen conditions in a thermionic converter were determined. An external transverse magnetic field was used for the diagnostics. The values of the plasma potential, the width of the anode region, and the density of the charged particles were determined for different conditions in the gap. The experimentally measured ion current density was compared with that calculated from the Saha--Langmuir equation. Information on the surface properties of a polycrystalline tungsten cathode (its work function and effective contrast) was obtained for working conditions. (auth)
