Translated from Zh. Tekh. Fiz.; 43: 855-860(Apr 1973). A simplified analytic model of an arc is used to show that the discharge in a thermionic converter must contract into a filament at the transition from the arc mode to the diffusion mode, in agreement with experiment. The contraction occurs at a low neutraIization parameter, at which the voltage-current characteristics calculated for a transversely homogeneous plasma display an unstable negative- resistance region.
