Response of mouse haemopoietic colony formers to acute or continuous gamma irradiation
The effect of single doses of/sup 137/Cs gamma rays or continuous /sup 60/Co gamma rays on mouse hemopoietic colony-forming units (CFU) was investigated using both the in vivo spleen colony assay technique (CFU/sub s/,) and the in vitro colony assay technique (CFU/sub c/). The difference in the respective D/sub o/ slopes was maintained during continuous irradiation. At the dose rate used (3.2 rad/hr) the shoulder on the CFU/sub s/ survival curve was abolished as expected, but the slopes of the early portions of the survival curves for both CFU/sub s/, and CFU/sub c/ were similar to those obtained after acute irradiation (600 rad/ min). A CFU/sub c/ subpopulation, which appears after adding red blood cells to the culture, showed a similar acute radiosensitivity to the whole CFU/sub c/ population but was less depleted under continuous irradiation. The results are discussed in relation to the kinetics of progenitor hemopoietic cell populations after a single, or during a prolonged, stress. (FR)
