Comparison of r.b.e. values of 15 MeV neutrons for damage to an experimental tumor and some normal tissues

From second meeting on fundamental and practical aspects of the application of fast neutrons in clinical radiotherapy; The Hague, Netherlands (3 Oct 1973). A high-intensity 15-MeV D-- T neutron generator yielding up to 4.7 x 10/sup 12/ neutrons per second was used to measure the biologic effect of neutrons in the EMT6 tumor, bone marrow, esophagus, and lung of the mouse. The RBE and OER values for the tumor are relatively close to those previously reported for the Ri rabdomyosarcoma in the rat. The RBE values for the tumor range from 6.3 at 50% survival of hypoxic cells downward as a function of dose. The OER for neutrons was 1.8. The RBE for mouse bone marrow CFU's was 1.6. For the esophageal lethality the RBE was 4 and for pulmonary lethality 2.2. The results confirm the relative consistency of rodent tumors in response to neutrons and add further evidence on the wide range of RBE's to be expected in normal tissues. (auth)
