Biological effects of $sup 252$Cf neutrons

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4405979
From second meeting on fundamental and practical aspects of the application of fast neutrons in clinical radiotherapy; The Hague, Netherlands (3 Oct 1973). The biological effects of /sup 252/Cf neutrons were studied with cultured cells, and with intact tissues. Measurements available to date, of the relative biological effect (RBE) and of the oxygen enhancement ratio (OER), are summarized and discussed. A table is presented to show the RBE of /sup 252/Cf neutrons, compared to /sup 137/Cs or /sup 226/Ra, for HeLa cells, hamster cells, chromosome aberrations, leukemia cells, Vicia faba, intestinal crypt cells, and mouse spleen cells, as measured by pig skin tolerance. Graphs are presented to show survival of hamster cells under oxygenated and anoxic conditions after irradiation by /sup 137/Cs and /sup 252/Cf. (HLW)
