Chinese hamster cells cultured in vitro were used to compare /sup 226/Ra gamma rays (dose rate, 50 rads/hour) with the mixed fust neutron/ gamma -ray emission from /sup 252/Cf (dose rate, 18 rads/hour). The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of /sup 252/Cf neutrons compared with radium gamma rays was 5.9. The oxygen enhancement ratios (OER) for /sup 226/Ra and /sup 252/Ca were found to be 2.0 and 1.42, respectively. The implications for radiotherapy are discussed. (auth)
