Chinese hamster (ovary) cells were exposed to the protracted irradiation of /sup 252/Cf or /sup 60/Co under conditions of aeration or extr eme hypoxia. Dose response curves were computed and these indicated values for oxygen enhancement ratio (OER) of 1.42 for /sup 60/Co irradiation at 100 rads/hr and 2.18 for /sup 252/Cf irradiation at a mean doserate of 15 rads/hr. From these values the therapeutic gain factor (TGF) would be only 0.65. Values for relative biological effectiveness (RBE) would be 6.7 for aerated cells and 4.4 for hypoxic cells. It is suggested from these data that no advantage would be gained by substituting /sup 252/Cf orthodox gamma sources in interstitial radiotherapy. (auth)
