Biological effects of Cf-252 gamma-neutron radiation: A summary of studies in the USSR

Journal Article · · Nucl. Sci. Appl.; (United States)

Studies of the radiobiology of /sup 252/Cf radiation were carried out to evaluate the biological effects of /sup 252/Cf radiation for mouse skin irradiated at low dose rates of 0.21 - 0.62 Gy/hr. RBE's were 5.2 - 7.5 compared to equivalent doses of /sup 60/Co gamma rays. For rats RBE values were 5.6 - 5.8 for erythema and 5.9 for moist reaction and epilation. High dose rate /sup 252/Cf irradiation of --0.3 - 0.7 Gy/min led to a decrease in RBE of about 2 - fold for a variety of endpoints. Under hypoxic conditions RBE was determined for Drosophila spermatid damage and RBE was found higher for hypoxic spermatids. Human hemopoietic cells had low RBE values of 1.2 - 1.5. Cytogenetic studies of chromosomes revealed that the neutron components produced the dominant effects observed and RBE's varied from 1.7 - 2.7 relative to /sup 60/Co. When studied at a dose rate of 0.0035 Gy/min RBE was 6.0. Studies of tumor bed effect for /sup 252/Cf suggest that bed effects can affect rumor response and late effects.
