Low-background telescope of counters for recording alpha-particles in (n,$alpha$)-reactions

Translated from Prib. Tekh. Eksp.; 16: No. 3, 54-56(1973). A telescope of counters is described for the recording of alpha particles in reactions that are caused by fast neutrons. The telescope consists of four proportional counters and one scintillation counter. The scintillation counter and three proportional counters are connected for coincidence, while the fourth proportional counter, which is situated in front of the target, is connected for anticoincidence with the four remaining counters in order to suppress the background from the front wall of the telescope and from the crystal of the scintillation counter. The achieved effect/background ratio is several times as good as it is for a telescope consisting of two proportional counters and one scintillation counter. The described equipment is used to study the angular and energy distributions of alpha -particles in (n, alpha )-reactions. (auth)
