Midgap streamer formation in streamer chambers

In streamer chamber technology. A description is presented of streamer formation in high-energy physics streamer chambers. While the streamers in these chambers are used to record trajectories of charged particles passing through them, the shape of the streamers themselves offers additional insight into the avalanche-streamer formation process. Modifications to the qualitative features of older descriptions of this process are made to account for the observed phenomena. (auth)
