Some characteristics of particle tracks in a neon-helium streamer chamber
A streamer generation model, modified from that of Chikovani, described and compared with experimental results. This model hows that the greatest sensitivity of the streamer density to ionization is expected when about 50% of all possible streamers, at a particular delay, are allowed to develop. Experiments show that the deviation of streamers from the track center is much less than that predicted by elementary diffusion and is dependent on the operating conditions of the chamber. Finally, the accuracy of the streamer chamber as a device for locating particle tracks is also investigated and the theoretical model is used to predict the systematic error produced by the shift of the streamer centers from the position of the original avalanches.
