Damage of rat thyroid by $sup 131$I and evidence against immunologic transferability

Young adult male rats given single injections of /sup 131/I (100, 300, or 500 mu Ci) or multiple injections of /sup 131/I (33 or 167 mu Ci weekly for 3 weeks) were studied periodically for up to 8 weeks for thyroid histopathology and evidence of immunologic transferability of radiation-induced thyroid lesions. The single injections of 300 or 500 mu Ci initiated an early acute inflammatory response in the thyroid gland. By 8 weeks extensive parenchymal degeneration was evident. After the dose of 100 mu Ci /sup 131/I an effect was seen at 8 weeks when a mild diffuse degeneration was evident. Fractionation of the 500- mu Ci injection (into three weekly injections of 167 mu Ci) resulted in only moderate parenchymal degeneration and more uniform destruction of thyroid tissue. Passive transfer of serum and/or lymphoid cells from nail-treated donors to nontreated young adult male rats failed to demonstrate transferability of the lesion. (auth)
