RADIOIODINE-INDUCED THYROID CARCINOMAS IN FEMALE RATS INDUCTION BY LOW DOSES OF RADIOIODINE
The development of neoplasms was studied in thyroid giands of female Long-Evans rats 2 yr after they had received 3 separate injections at monthly intervals of 10 C of I/sup 131/. Benign thyroid nodules or adenomas were observed in 39% of the 49 rats given the I/sup 131/, whereas only 1 of the 31 control rats displayed a thyroid adenoma. Papillary carcinomas of low-grade malignancy were observed in 3 female I/sup 131/-treated rats (6%); no follicular carcinomas developed in them. The incidence of both benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms found in female rats injected with low doses of I/sup 131/ was lower than that in male rats, 96% of which developed thyroid adenomas. It appears that the proliferative response with development of benign and malignant thyroid neoplasms is significantly less active in the female rat thyroid gland than in the male. An almost equal incidence of papillary and follicular carcinomas was induced in male rats by I/sup 131/. The majority of the follicles of the thyroid glands of the I/sup 131/-treated rats was smaller than those in normal rats and contained granular, degenerating colloid. The incidence of proliferative lesions of the parathyroid glands (hyperplasia and/or adenoma) was slightly higher in the I/sup 131/-treated female rats than in I/sip 131/-treated males (47% and 33%, respectively), although the incidence in I/sip 131/-injected and control female rats was about the same (47% and 42%).
