In lectures from the LAMPF summer school. The discussion covers a brief review of the multiple scattering theory, the effects of the off-shell extension of the pion--nucleon transition matrix, the convergence of the multiple scattering series, the introduction of a pion-bound nucleon transition operator which should give a better estimate of the 1st order optical potential, and the evaluation of the second-order of the optical potential.
