In lectures from the LAMPF summer school. A lecture is given on a review of Watson's derivation of the optical potential, with all the approximations clearly listed, several caveats and comments relating to the various approximations, the comparison of the Kisslinger and other models with experimental data, and the introduction to the newest and simplest successful form of the classical optical model, the effective radius model.
