Connection between the off-shell continuation of the $pi$--N scattering amplitude and the importance of nuclear correlations in the $pi$--nucleus optical potential

In lectures from the LAMPF summer school. Since there was found to be a connection between the off-shell dependence and the presence of nuclear correlations, the connection is made somewhat more explicit by studying a simple model. The propagation of p-wave pions in nuclear matter is calculated. (JFP)
