U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ and UO/sub 2/ (5 to 50 g) were for 1.5 hr heated to temperatures of from 400 to 1200 deg C, after irradiation with neutrons, in oxygen and hydrogen. The yield of Mo/sup 99/ was measured. For U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ the yield of Mo/sup 99/ depends malnly upon the annealing temperature but not upon the nature of the gas. The transformation of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ into UO/sub 2/ has no influence upon the Mo yield on the occasion of the heating of U/sub 3/O/ sub 8/ in hydrogen. During heating of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ in oxygen T = 1200 deg C) about 15% Mo/sup 99/ evaporates. In the case of hydrogen annealing no Mo/sup 99/ evaporation was observed in the total temperature range. If UO/sub 2/ is annealed in hydrogen, the Mo/sup 99/ yield increases at higher temperatures and attains 11% at 1200 deg C. In the case of annealing in oxygen, however, the Mo/ sup 99/ yield at 1000 attains a maximum of 83.5%. At 1200 40% of the total Mo/sup 99/ evaporates. If this sample is then treated with certain liquids, 57% evaporates. It does not seem wrong to assume that a centain part of Mo/sup 99/ is produced in the form of MoO/sub 3/ on the occasion of fission. (TCO)
