STUDY OF THE EQUILIBRIUM OF URANIUM OXIDES BETWEEN 1200 AND 1800 (in French)

The equilibrium UO/sub 2.60/ in equilibrium UO/sub 2.25/ + 7/40 O/sub 2/ was studied between 1200 and 1800 deg C by sample tempering, thermobalance measurements, and x-ray diffraction. The U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ samples were held nt a given temperature in an atmosphere with known nitrogen and oxygen concentrations; they were then abruptly tempered in water, dried, and ground. The powder is,then heated in a hydrogen atmosphere and the weight loss is determined. Isobaric curves obtained show that at high temperature it is solid UO/sub 2.25/ (or U/sub 4/O/sub 9/) which is stable and that for a given partial oxygen pressure the equilibrium temperature UO/sub 2.25/- UO/sub 2.60/ is fixed. The results indicate a linear relationship between the inverse of the absolute temperature of the UO/sub 2.60/ decomposition into UO/sub 2.25/ and the log Po (partial oxygen pressure). The oxygen partial pressures were calculated for various temperatures. (J.S.R.)
