HYDROGEN REDUCTION OF URANIUM OXIDES: A PHASE STUDY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4110744
The successive phase changes which occur during the hydrogen reduction of uranium oxides were studied in situ by means of a controlled-atmosphere, x-ray diffractometer hot stage, at temperatures of 480 and 750 deg C. The phase sequence which occurs during the reduction of gamma -UO/sub 3/, the most stable allotrope of UO/sub 3/, is as follows: gamma -UO/sub 3/ (orthorhombic) yields / sup 1/ U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ (pseudo-hexagonal) yields /sup 2/ U/sub 3/O/sup 8-/ (orthor hombic) yields /sup 3/ UO/sub 2+/ (cubic) yields /sup 4/ UO/sup 2/ (cubic). The upper compositional limit of the nonstoichiometric phase, UO/sub 2+/ , is greater at the higher reduction temperature, in agreement with the equilibrium phase diagram. When stanting with U/sub 3/O/sub 8/, reactions 2, 3, and 4, as given above, were observed. In conjunction with this work, beta -U/ sub 3/O/sub 8/ was prepared and was found to revert endothermically to conventional U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ at about 130 deg C. (auth)
