INVESTIGATION OF URANIUM OXIDES AND URANIUM CARBIDES BY DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSIS (in German)

Journal Article · · Nukleonik (West Germany) Discontinued with vol. 12
OSTI ID:4131487
Investigations of some reactions of uranium oxides and uranium carbides by differential thermal analysis are described. The oxidation of UO/sub 2/ was found to proceed in two steps, which were strongly dependent on the temperature, particle size, and partial pressure of oxygen. The oxidation is combined with a strong surface growth. The reduction of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ was found to occur in oniy one step, which showed scarcely any dependence on particle or surface size. The surface size decreases in the course of the reduction. The oxidation of UC was found to be a strongly exothermic process, which occurred at 350 deg C and by careful control yielded U/sub 3/O/sub 8/. U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ dissociated in about 1100 deg C oxygen to a complex, UO/sub 2.25/(U/sub 4/O/sub 9/). The oxidation of a UO/sub 2/-Mo pellet led to a mixed phase, MoO/sub 3/ -U/sub 3/O/sub 8/, which melts at about 1000 deg C. (tr-auth)
