The suitability of Co/sup 60/ and Cs/sup 137/ as telecurie sources is discussed. Their advantages and disadvantages are compared. The calculation of the dose rate of gamma radiation from the level scheme of the radioactive nucleus is described. The protective shielding; necessary in the use of Co/sup 60/ and Cs/sup 137/ is reviewed. (J.S.R.)
