A comparative analysis is presented of the cancerogenic effects of 15 radioactive isotopes (Sr/sup 89/, Sr/sup 90/, mixture of Sr/sup 89 and Sr/sup 90/ Ba/sup 140/, Y/sup 90, Y/sup 91, mixture of BETA emitters, Cs/sup 137/, Ca/sup 45/, Nb/sup 95/, Ce/sup 144/, Pm/sup 147/, La/sup 140/, Ru/sup 106/, and Pu/sup 239/) which differ in their physical properties and distribution in the organism. The incidence of osteosarcomas depends on the quantity of the radioactive substance introduced and on the period of actual fission, the higher the effective fission period the higher is the percentage of tumaor development. The optimal osteosarcomagenic dose of absorbed energy is 10 to 20 krep, the minimum dose 2 to 3 krep. The incidence of leukemias induced by radioactive isotopes ranges from 3 to 10%. The type of tumors, the location, and development processes depend on the character of distribution of the radioactive substances. (R.V.J.)
