THE INELASTIC SCATTERING OF PROTONS BY C$sup 1$$sup 2$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
The differentiaI cross section and polarization for the inelastic scattering of 180-Mev protons by C/sup 12/ loaving the nucleus in the 4.43-Mev state are calculated, using sheil model wavefuactions in the L-S and j-j coupling extremes and nucleon-nucleon phase shifts taken from an analysis of free nucleon- nucleon scattering, and taking the absorption part of the optical model potential into account. Good agreement is found when L-S coupling is used, especially when use is made of information obtained from inelastic electron scattering to obtain a correction to the nuclear matrix elements calculated with the crude shell model wavefunctions. Some discussion is given of the difference between polarization and asymmetry in inelastic scattering and it is shown that this difference is likely to be small. (auth)
