INELASTIC SCATTERING OF PROTONS BY O$sup 1$$sup 6$

A brief report is given on some preliminary calculations on proton inelastic scattering by O/sup 16/ at 180 Mev. The transition from the ground state to the excited state is treated as the result of a single nucleon-nucleon collision described by the t-matrix for free nucleonnucleon collisions. The neglect of the spin-orbit part and distortion of the waves on account of Coulomb interaction do not introduce serious errors. The 6.14-Mev level was studied, which was treated in the LS coupling as an excitation from the ground state S/sup 4/P/sup 12/ with L = S = T=0 to the state L = 3, S = T = 0 in the S/sup 4/P/sup 11/D/sup 1/ configuration.
