Chemical reactions of hot recoil chlorine atoms with carbon tetrachloride were studied. Gaseous mixtures of carbon tetrachloride, moderator (argon) and scavengers (I/sub 2/ and C/sub 2/,H/sub 4/) at a total pressure of 83 torr were irradiated in a reactor. Analysis of products was made using standard radio-gas chromatography technique, followed by counting of frozen species in a well-type scintillation counter, connected to a multichannel pulse height analyzer. The dependence oi product yield on the percentage of ethylene present in the reaction mixture was determined. Hot chlorine replacement reactions yielding the labelled CCl/sub 3//sup 38/Cl and CCl/sub 2///sup 38/ were found. The chlorine abstraction reaction was observed by means of the subsequent reaction of labelled Cl/sup 38/Cl with ethylene to form C/sub 2/H/sub 4/cl/sup 38/ Cl. Detailed studies of the effe ct of argon moderator on /sup 38/Cl + CCl/sub 4/ system were made. The data obtained were analyzed by means of the kinetic theory of hot reactions and then compared with similar results, obtained previously on T + CH/sub 4/ and F + CF/sub 4/ systems. (GE)
