Reactions of recoil chlorine. III. Chemical effects of $sup 37$Cl(n,$gamma$$)$$sup 38$Cl in binary mixtures of organic chlorides
The reaction of recoil chlorine /sup 37/Cl(n, gamma )/sup 38/Cl in binary mixtures of carbon tetrachloride or chlorobenzene with 1-butyl or 1-hexyl chloride and also in mixtures of carbon tetrachloride with chlorobenzene or benzyl chloride were studied. No differences in reaction were observed that could be ascribed to the chemical origin of the recoil chlorine. Organic yields in CCl/sub 4/ or C/sub 6/H/sub 5/Cl were diminished by the addition of alkyl halides, due to the scavenging power of alkyl C -- H bonds for thermal chlorine atoms. Slightly different organic yields were found for different alkyl halides increasing with the number of carbon atoms from C/sub 3/ to C/sub 6/. It is suggested that this increase is due to the tendency of smaller recently labelled molecules to decompose. However, in all cases the organic yield for pure RC1 was greater than the extrapolated yield for the corresponding pure RH. (GE)
