The reactions of thermal chlorine atoms with ethylene have been studied using radioactive /sup 38/Cl atoms from the neutron reaction /sup 37/Cl(n,..gamma..)/sup 38/Cl on CClF/sub 3/. The /sup 38/Cl atoms are moderated to thermal energies by multiple collisions with CClF/sub 3/(mole fraction greater than 0.9), and then allowed to react with C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ plus HI or H/sub 2/S. The only observed product is C/sub 2/H/sub 5//sup 38/Cl, representing addition to ethylene to form C/sub 2/H/sub 4//sup 38/Cl*. The decomposition rate of C/sub 2/H/sub 4//sup 38/Cl* by loss of /sup 38/Cl was measured by varying the total pressure in the system. The rates of decomposition and collisional stabilization are equal at a CClF/sub 3/ pressure of 800 +- 120 Torr. The rate constants for reactions 1, 10, and 15 are in the ratios (k/sub 10//k/sub 1/) = 0.60 +- 0.05 and (k/sub 15//k/sub 1/) = 0.45 +- 0.05 at 293 K: /sup 38/Cl + C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ ..-->.. C/sub 2/H/sub 4//sup 38/Cl*(1); /sup 38/Cl + HI ..-->.. H/sup 38/Cl + I(10); /sup 38/Cl + H/sub 2/S ..-->.. H/sup 38/Cl + SH(15).
