Emergency monitoring of an inhalation incident
- ed.
From third Health Physics Society midyear topical symposium; Los Angeles, California, USA (29 Jan 1969). See CONF-690103P3. Accidental rupture of a sealed quartz ampule containing approximately 1 curie of Europium oxide (/ sup 152/Eu, /sup 154/Eu, /sup 155/Eu, and /su p 156/Eu mixture) resulted in the generation of aerosol which caused significant external and internal contamination of two individuals. Health physics emergency procedures were initiated within five minutes of the incident and will be summarized in detail. This includes the initial evaluation and response to the accident report; the preliminary evaluation of personnel and area contamination; and ths immediate exposure control methods. Subsequent medical handling and problems will be reviewed. Decontamination methods, equipment, and materials will be summarized together with economical considerations used in evaluating the clean-up program. Aspects of reporting of the incident by news media and the handling of publicity will be given. (auth)
