181-tungsten contamination incident

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4318555

From third Health Physics Society midyear topical symposium; Los Angeles, California, USA (29 Jan 1969). See CONF-690103P2. A contamination incident at SLAC occurred in the accelerator housing at the positron source, due to a cooling water spill. This incident principally involved /sup 181/W. From 5 to 50 mu Ci of /sup 181/W was found on hands and clothing of several workers. The relative insolubility of tungsten resulted in contamination about three orders of magnitude greater than predicted from routine water sampling. A brief description of the incident, methods of detection, and the relative importance of this occurrence are discussed. (auth)
