Effects of radiation on the amino acid metabolism of the suprarenal gland

White rats were administered 0.5 mu Ci/g body weight of /sup 35/ Slabeled methionine in conjunction with a standard diet. Control animals were given /sup 75/Se-labeled selenomethionine; all were subsequently irradiated with 200 R and 500 R x-rays. Radioactive sulfur and selenium in the suprarenal gland were determined radiometrically, using radiochromatographic techniques. The analyses were carried out in the protein fractions also. Twenty-four hours following the irradiation more /sup 75/Selabeled material became incorporated both in the gland and the protein fractions than /sup 35/S-labeled material. There was also evidence of a shift in the S-amino acid concentrations of the various protein fractions caused by the irradiation. No definttive conclusions about damage to DNA radiation damage could be made on the basis of the data obtained in these experiments. Eight references, including 5 Romanian, 1 Russian, and 2 Western.
