Licensure of radiobioassay laboratories

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4306126
From third Health Physics Society midyear topical symposium; Los Angeles, California, USA (29 Jan 1969). See CONF-690103P3. In December 1967, Congress passed the Clinical Laboratories Improvement Act of 1967, which provides for the licensure of any laboratory involved in the analysis of specimens taken from the human body which are transported in interstate commerce. These laboratories which perform analyses of body media for radionuclides (radiobioassay) are included within the jurisdiction of this law. This paper describes the law and the rationale used in the development of regulations that will govern the licensure of such laboratories. Particular emphasis is placed on the proficiency testing portion of these regulations and its potential significance and importance to the general field of personnel monitoring for radionuclide body burden evaluations.
