Training and certification of health physics technicians

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4306055
From third Health Physics Society midyear topical symposium; Los Angeles, California, USA (29 Jan 1969). See CONF-690103P3. At least twelve formal programs in radiation monitoring or radiation technology hava been established at the post-high school level, many of which lead to an associate degree. These programs are described and compared in light of the needs and functions of the operational health physics technician. Actual experience with the establishment and operation of two such programs indicates a need for laboratory equipment, instructors with field experience, and support by the nuclear industry, particularly with regard to placement of personnel. To ensure a minimuni level of competence among health physics technicians, a certification program patterned along the lines of that maintained by the American Board of Health Physics is proposed, but implemented by a combined board of Certifted Health Physicists and health physics technicians.
