From third Health Physics Society midyear topical symposium; Los Angeles, California, USA (29 Jan 1969). See CONF-690103P3. Health physicists agree that the rapidly expanding use of nuclear energy is creating an increasing demand for persons trained in radiation protection. Any disagreement that does exist is limited primarily to the background and training required by persons entering the radiation protection field and the type of work the person should be trained to perform. Part of the difficulty is due to the broad scope of health physics. This situation is not limited to the United States but is worldwide. By classifying health physicists into types and reviewing past education and training programs, we will show how well these programs met their goals. In a similar manner, present education and training programs are examined in an attempt to evaluate whether they will meet our present and near-future health physics requirements. This type of review of past and present programs permits us to speculate on the training and education programs that will be most fruitful in meeting future needs for health physicists. (auth)
