MEASUREMENT OF THE FISSION CROSS SECTIONS AND NUMBERS OF PROMPT NEUTRONS EMITTED BY FISSION

A fission cross section of 0.10 barns was measured for U/sup 238/ using 13.6-Mev neutrons from the reaction T(d,n)H/sup 4/. The number of prompt neutrons emitted in / and Th/sup 232/ was measured. The effective neutron fission cross section for slow neutrons of Pu/sup 239/ was measured. The fission cross section of U/sup 235/ for immediate energy neutrons was measured by time-of- flight methods. (W.D.M)
